Payoja Agarwal (born 1995, India) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Kotabagh, Uttarakhand, India. Specialising in pottery and painting, she embraces spontaneity, allowing the materials to guide her while maintaining a balance between form and function. Her abstract paintings, created with oil pastels, focus on intuitive colour compositions that evoke emotion and contemplation. My work is an ongoing dialogue between nature, intuition, and form. As both a potter and a painter, I embrace spontaneity, letting materials and colours guide my process while maintaining a delicate balance between control and freedom. My pottery begins with a rough idea, but the clay often takes its own shape, influenced by the moment. In contrast, my paintings are abstract, rooted in intuition and emotion, and guided by the interaction of colours as they unfold on the surface. Each piece is a meditation on balance, flow, and the spiritual energy that arises when elements come together naturally. I work with local materials in ceramics and make my own glazes which fuel my creative output. I use oil pastels on paper for my paintings which allow me the spontaneity of capturing my emotions of the moment. Living in the countryside, I draw inspiration from my surroundings, from the plants in my garden to the shifting light on the landscape. My practice is not just about the finished object but about the experience of creating, where rest and reflection become as essential as the act of making itself. I aim to create pieces that invite viewers to pause, observe, and immerse themselves in the subtle interplay between nature and human touch.
