Olivia Addicott (b. 2001, Bristol, England) lives and works in London. She graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2024 where she studied BA Fine Art: Painting and had three shows within the institution alongside her peers including ‘Parenthesis’, Copeland Gallery, ‘Spectrum’, Bargehouse, ‘En Route’, Southwark Park Galleries and Camberwell Painting 24' Degree Show. Artist Statement: I am an abstract painter inspired by the movement of paint, the extension between the paintbrush and my arm, reaching and mark-making. Landscape has allowed me to find the forms and expressions that I feel connected to. My practice is rapid and demanding by having quick bursts of energy and thoughtfulness within my gestural brush strokes, creating a tactile conversation between myself and the canvas. My painting process is simple. I start with a sketch from still life, places I have been and taken note of through a drawing. I then create my work from those many sketches. Taking the organic shapes I have made and putting them down onto canvas. I like to work with oil as it gives a nice thickness and texture to my lines, a combination of oil sticks and pastels give another layered component that I enjoy. I also tend to put more scratchy movements into my works using pencils and smaller conte sticks which creates depth to the thicker lines – but I try not to think too much about the process and just put down what feels right, reflecting my everyday interactions with the world around me. My mark-making, while being energetic has got a softness and femininity about it. I tend to find diagonals and curves within my works, allowing the eye to gently move around the canvas across the different forms of the landscape. I hope to achieve a sense of atmosphere within my paintings, the landscape engulfing a viewer and allowing them to connect with the marks I have created.
