Louise Pettifer was born in Kent in 1979. She studied at UCA Farnham (2001) for her BA in Textiles and later completed an MA in Drawing from Camberwell, University of the Arts London (2007). Her paintings and drawings are delicate, layered works, with a primary focus on exploring the interconnectedness of nature. Notable projects include residencies at institutions such as the National Trust's Sissinghurst Castle Garden in 2014-2015 and more recently, at The Lossenham Project in 2023-2024. In 2019 she was awarded Arts Council DYCP funding to spend a year developing a new body of work around the concept of rewilding. Recent exhibitions include 'If Heaven Falls' at Lido Stores, Margate, ‘For the Wild’ at Intra Arts, Rochester and ‘Margins’ curated by Matthew Burrows at Rye Creative Centre. These are a collection of recent experimental drawings. I use drawing in a manner I consider akin to weaving and spinning, forming lines which attempt to describe the interconnectivity of everything in nature, through a combination of instinctive mark making and observational drawing. Some of these works are bilateral drawings - drawings made with both hands at the same time. I enjoy the imperfect symmetry that results from this process. The themes I am exploring through my work started with a deep reverence for nature and are growing to encompass plant consciousness and communication, the concept of life force, and an observation of the intricate, entwined and dependent relationship of all living beings, whether plant, animal, or mineral. I work on heavyweight, smooth watercolour paper, and add glazes of acrylic colour to areas of the pencil drawings.
