Janina Gude grew up in Constance and has lived and worked in Hamburg for over ten years. In 2021, she graduated from the HAW in Hamburg with a degree in illustration and has been working as a freelance artist in the fields of painting, illustration and ceramics ever since. The central theme of her work to date is the search for her personal sense of home. In search of inspiration for her work, she returns to the landscape of her childhood in southern Germany to find her motifs. However, her painting is not about the mere representation of this very nature. Rather, she is looking for a feeling that can be transferred into her pictures and revealed to the viewer. The resulting works are partly abstract rhythms of nature, modern and expressively interpreted landscapes, which come together to form their own harmony in the color and structure of the surfaces. The diverse materiality of the media also plays a central role here. They range from oil painting on cotton and canvas to soft pastels and ceramics.

These works are from my series “Heimatbilder” in which I am exploring the very personal feeling of home. I set out to understand the origin of my very own homeland in order to make it visually tangible for the viewer on the exhibited picture surfaces. In the process of creating this series, I understood, that my very personal home can not be found in a specific place. Rather, it is more a feeling that arises, whenever I am in a certain landscape. In order to make this feeling of „being at home“ visible on a surface, the deliberately chosen color and its materiality play an important role in this. The colour surfaces within the pictures enter into a relationship with each other to create a very specific sound. This can also be perceived on an emotional level and create, when experienced visually, a feeling that I reconnect with of feeling at home.
