Phoebe Peerbux (b.1989) lives and works in South London. Having trained at Wimbledon School of Art and London College of Fashion, she graduated with a BA in Performance Design in 2012. Her work uses the dynamic tension of opposites to explore the relationship between the empirical world and the interior and unseen realms. Peerbux's inspirations come from her strong emotional relationship with colour, a mystic appreciation for nature, with its pattern, rhythm and flow, and a yearning to escape the self and embrace a state of order and connectedness in an increasingly polarised and chaotic world. Challenging herself to relinquish control and enter a state of flow, focus and acceptance she uses the unpredictability of saturated paper and dilute inks to cast adrift in the sublime, evoking transient states; half-glimpsed landscapes, unformed thoughts, and treasured memories. Peerbux places these formless worlds in conversation with fleshy and full bodied oil pastel gardens, worked from observation, to create vibrant and rhythmic paradisal scenes. Through her choice of focus and perspective Peerbux looks to create a visual tonic for the viewer, deepening connection and heightening emotional engagement with beauty in both our seen and unseen realities.
