Orlanda Broom, b.1974. Orlanda Broom graduated with an MA Fine Art from Winchester School of Art (Barcelona) in 1997 after study BA Fine Art at Cheltenham & Glos. Her studio is based in the south of England and she regularly exhibits in London and internationally. Her work has been selected for RA Summer Exhibition, Columbia Threadneedle Prize, Wells Contemporary, RWA. Commissions have included large scale works for Four Seasons Downtown, NYC and Mandarin Oriental in London. Orlanda worked with the charity Hospital Rooms to create a mural in an NHS facility. Her work is currently part of ‘Flowers – Flora in Contemporary Art & Culture’ at Saatchi Gallery and her work was shortlisted for the inaugural Cass Art Prize at the end of 2024. I paint layered compositions which draw from exotic flora set in wild terrains and otherworldly landscapes. Plant forms take on fleshy, corporeal qualities and the foliage seems to fight for dominance. There’s a playful, anthropomorphic quality to some of my subjects, where characters emerge and relate to one another. The paintings are created with a focus on materials, experimentation and the properties of paint itself, as such the composition evolves on the canvas and retains a dynamic energy. My works on paper are especially playful in theme and act as a reference point for larger paintings on canvas. Working on paper has a directness and simplicity of form that sets these works apart from my larger canvasses.
