B.1990 Harriet Pattinson trained classically in Florence in portraiture and still life. After setting up her studio in London she worked on portrait commissions and traditional still life. In 2020, when the covid lockdown disrupted everyone's normal way of life, Harriet stepped out of this very traditional style and created fractured, figurative works, culminating in her 2022 solo show “Somewhat Strange”. This new series of works on paper ("TULIPMANIA") is an amalgamation of the two ways of working, realising the flowers in all their ephemeral beauty with the skilful brush strokes but whilst bringing a contemporary feel with the layering. Harriet’s work always has a keen focus on paint quality, creating different textures and a shared love of strong contrast with The Dutch Masters. "This series was heavily influenced by the Dutch Masters’ Tulip paintings. I have always loved the strong contrast in the Dutch masterpieces; the way they demand your attention and then entice you to examine them more closely, revealing their supreme skill and play. However, I wanted to plant my paintings in today’s world and so I used an effect very reminiscent of our phone screens and platforms like Instagram, to introduce a very modern change of scale. I painted a thin zoomed image of the tulip underneath the fully realised version of same tulip. The outcome is designed to be one of fracture, in conversation with my 2022 exhibition (“Somewhat Strange“). The title “TULIPMANIA” harks back to the Dutch Masters’ obsession with tulips, and the fracture from reality which tulip bulbs created in the 1630s. I wanted my modern twist to also reflect the many repeated equivalents of Tulipmania in our contemporary world. And yet all of this is set against my focus on the physical presence and natural beauty of this wonderful flower."
