Xen Ruiz (b. 1987 in Barcelona, ES) is a self-thaught painter currently living and working in Berlin, Germany. Xen works mainly with oil paints and paper cut-outs. Both mediums are characterized by a minimalist aesthetic, often infused with vibrant colors that evoke a sense of joy. Yet these elements are contrasted with emotionally charged landscapes, creating a juxtaposition that reflects Xen’s belief in the inherent contradictions of the human experience and the dualities that shape our lives. Starting from this polarity and a keen interest in human emotions, Xen's artistic practice explores the tension between the theatrical and the everyday, mixing these two seemingly opposite worlds: the simplicity of the ordinary versus the drama and the absurd, thus enveloping the viewer in a nostalgic atmosphere that seems to come from a distant time. Through this melancholic, humorous and sometimes provocative imaginary world, Xen intends to invite the viewer to reflect on themes such as the passage of time, identity, love and loneliness; to get lost in the game of a search for answers that may never be revealed.
