Yasaman Mollasalehi is a Manchester-based painter originally from Tehran, Iran. Her artistic journey began amidst a challenging cultural landscape where art was not seen as a viable profession for women, prompting her to initially pursue science. Driven by an unyielding passion for creativity, she later earned a degree in Painting from the Tehran University of Art. Seeking a better space for her artistic life, she chose to relocate to the UK, where she completed her MA in Painting at the Manchester School of Art, further advancing her practice. Yasaman’s work is a fusion of Eastern and Western artistic traditions, exploring themes of memory, time, and cultural empathy. Deeply influenced by Persian Miniatures, her oil paintings feature intricate layers and washes, capturing the fluidity of memory and the interplay of light and form. Drawing from architecture, nature, and personal experiences, her art creates immersive landscapes that resonate with the shared human experience. Committed to fostering connection through art, Yasaman’s practice celebrates cultural diversity while encouraging reflection on identity and resilience.

“My work explores the shifting nature of memory and time, capturing their fluidity on canvas through layered oil painting techniques. I wash some layers with turpentine and oil before repainting from scratch, creating a dynamic interplay between the past and the present. By incorporating architectural elements into my compositions, I reconstruct the emotions and atmospheres of spaces, infusing them with the presence of those who once inhabited them. Each hue in my work holds fragments of untold stories, blending memories of stillness and vibrancy to invite viewers into a dialogue between history and the present. From a young age, I have been captivated by light, vibrant colour, and form, a fascination that has remained a constant companion. My journey began with recreating scenes from old family photos, transforming the canvas into a portal for preserving cherished moments. Leaving my homeland brought with it a deep reservoir of emotions and memories rooted in Persian culture and tradition, which continue to profoundly shape my recent works. Currently, my practice draws inspiration from Persian Miniatures, architecture, nature, and human connections. I explore these themes by shaping my canvases with architectural forms, using stencils to create compelling compositions, and layering oil paints to enhance light and colour reflection. Persian stained-glass colours provide a key source of inspiration, enabling me to evoke timeless qualities in my art. By studying the enduring aspects of Persian Miniatures, I aim to infuse my work with their timeless resonance while ensuring its contemporary relevance. My goal is to develop a personal modernism that transcends cultural boundaries, fostering empathy and understanding among diverse audiences. Through dynamic lines, vibrant forms, and intricate layers, I seek to create enigmatic dialogues that invite viewers to uncover their own narratives within my paintings. This journey is one of continuous exploration, reflection, and practice as I work towards establishing a distinct style that will endure the test of time.”
