Michelle Maddox was born in Cambridge, England and is currently based in Zurich Switzerland. She has a Master of Art in Fine Art (Distinction) from UCA England, a BA in the History of Art from Birkbeck, and has recently finished a postgraduate drawing year with the Royal Drawing School. Recent exhibitions include the New English Art Club at the Mall Galleries, the Royal Academy Summer exhibition in London in 2020 and 2023, Wells Art Contemporary in 2024, and Hampstead Art Society Annual exhibition in 2022, 2023, and 2024. She recently had a successful solo exhibition at the Kunstraum Melanie and Albert Ruegg Foundation, Zurich. My work has been mainly preoccupied with the ordinary object within the Still Life genre, specifically the disregarded or the mundane where I aim to enhance its potential through my favoured medium of oil paint. The painting as an object is more important than the initial subject, although the ordinary object has always fascinated me – I am not necessarily looking for the most beautiful subject, but rather a subject which allows for the use of nuanced colour and light to create a harmonious image. After reading such authors as George Perec about their observations of the everyday as opposed to the sensational with which we are bombarded in the media, I began a deep visual study of the ordinary. My recent still lifes are about looking at the everyday object beyond its daily role and seeing it as shapes and colours. My paintings are often seen as quiet and calm, which is not necessarily done consciously, but I tend to choose harmonious palettes and compositions. I see this as an underlying therapeutic need for a retreat from the chaos of the current society for both myself and my audience. It is how I retrieve energy. Her work is in private collections in Switzerland, England, France, Luxembourg, Holland, Sweden, Australia, the Cayman Islands and Canada.
