Charlotte Robertson (b.1983) is an artist and somatic therapist living in Dunedin, New Zealand. She works with oil paint on ply and paper, creating works that are talismanic in nature. Influenced by personal mythology, the natural world and visionary states, she creates altar-like compositions that invite the viewer to embark on their own journey of interpretation. Charlotte is a self-taught artist, actively exhibiting in group and solo shows across New Zealand and Australia. When I close my eyes, I see cascading colours, figures and faces. The themes I work with are cyclical in nature. My job as the painter is to follow the theme and imagery as best I can, riding a wave of energy as I seek to translate these images from my mind. They are fleeting and if I am not swift they will move on quickly, maybe to be lost forever. Our interconnectedness and cyclical nature is mirrored by nature. There are some times that are for new life and growth that heads in an arc towards full bloom. Once the flower has bloomed, it must wither, but all things being equal, its death is of as much value as the full glory of its bloom. The paintings I have created for Blue Shop Galleries WOP7 depict various stages of the cycles of life and death and the cycles of nature. Serpent imagery weaves its way throughout this body of work, showing up centrally or quietly in the background, always there, always exuding its influence.
