Born into a family of artists in Zambia in 1981, Emily moved to the UK at an early age and grew up in Sussex. Having studied up to foundation level at Brighton College in her early twenties, Emily took up a studio practice and went full time whilst living in London 14 years ago. Emily recently returned to the UK after four years painting in Madrid and Cadiz, she currently lives in Hove. Her work is currently being shown with Columbia Road Gallery, Smithson Projects and Wondering People. My semi abstracted figures are often placed within scenes of nature. An exploration of colour and form has underpinned my practice. Having moved to and lived in different countries, I want my work to exhibit a connectiveness and sensitive appreciation for places I know well, and frequently return to in my work. I have been increasingly interested in painting women within landscapes. Using memories of moments in time that have shaped my experience. As a queer woman, narratives around female connection and intimacy is a subject I often want to explore in my painting.
